Hi, I'm Hopson Gausi 👋

Software Engineer · Health Information Systems · Laboratory Interoperability

Building the systems that connect labs, clinics, and national health data — reliably, at scale.

👨‍💻 About Me

I'm a software developer based in Malawi with 6+ years of experience building and maintaining national-scale health information systems — the kind of infrastructure that quietly keeps laboratories, clinics, and health programmes running.

My day-to-day work sits at the intersection of backend engineering, systems integration, and public health data. I build the APIs, sync services, and machine-integration layers that let laboratory instruments, EMRs, and national repositories talk to each other reliably — across 50+ health facilities and counting.

Alongside that, I'm growing into epidemiological data analysis and infectious disease modelling, applying R and Python to real public health datasets as part of a research team.

🏥 What I Build

Laboratory & Health Information Systems

  • IBLIS — a Laboratory Information Management System deployed nationwide across 50+ hospitals under Malawi's CDC/PEPFAR programme, built with Vue.js and Ruby on Rails
  • NLIMS — Malawi's national laboratory data repository and API integration layer; I currently maintain it and build new features connecting it to other EMRs
  • Malawi National Laboratory Tests Catalog System — built and actively maintained
  • Specimen ID Generation System — sample tracking for national laboratory operations
  • ART-EMR — contribute to build and maintenance
  • MAHIS — Malawi's national Health Information System; contributed to ART, Nutrition, and Lab integration modules
  • OpenMRS — integrations connecting OpenMRS-based platforms with national laboratory and health data systems

Laboratory Instrument Integration

Connecting laboratory analyzers to software systems, using ASTM, HL7 v2, and MLLP:

Lab Analyzer (Sysmex / Mindray / GeneXpert)
        │
        │ ASTM / HL7 v2 / MLLP
        ▼
  Machine-Integration Driver
        │
        │ REST API
        ▼
     LIMS / NLIMS
        │
        ▼
   EMR · ART-EMR · MAHIS · National Reporting
  • Machine-integration drivers for 15+ hematology, biochemistry, and microbiology analyzers
  • HiLabel — printing service for Zebra label printers, supporting specimen labelling across sites
  • OERR integration — connected EGPAF systems with GHII's OERR platform for ward-based test ordering and result receiving
  • RESTful APIs linking LIMS, ART-EMR, EID/VL, and R4H systems for real-time national data sharing

🔬 Selected Project: LIS Gateway

A lightweight, multi-protocol gateway for connecting laboratory analyzers and lab-floor devices to a Laboratory Information System — built with Rust and Tokio for reliable, high-performance handling of instrument traffic.

🧬 Epidemiology & Data Science

Beyond application development, I support epidemic modelling work at the Centre for Epidemiological and Mathematical Research (CEMAR):

  • Co-author on a Bayesian geospatial epidemiology study on urban malaria in Malawi (R-INLA), submitted to Epidemics — Special Issue: Training the Future
  • Data cleaning, analysis, and visualization for large-scale epidemiological datasets using R and Python
  • Co-author on a cholera and malaria transmission modelling study, presented at the IDM Symposium (United States)
  • R support mentor for CEMAR 2025, a pan-African infectious disease modelling training programme reaching 190 participants across 17 countries

I'm actively working to deepen this side of my skillset — statistics is where my degree started, and it's where I want a growing share of my work to live.
