Clicking any button with the mouse (History in the header, a mode, a preference) moved keyboard focus to that button, so Escape, Ctrl+R, and typing itself stopped working until you clicked the background. Buttons now accept Tab focus only, and toggling History refocuses the input. The standalone smoke test clicks the header button and a mode button and confirms Escape and typing still work.
