New work branches start from a user-chosen upstream/XX-dev base, with merge-back cautions for branches based on in-flight work. Canonical workflow in .claude/skills/branching-strategy/SKILL.md, mirrored as a Cursor rule and an AGENTS.md section; .gitignore now tracks .claude/skills while keeping user-specific settings ignored.
