Turn selected scholarly text into structured, verifiable citations β directly in your browser.
CitRe is a free, privacy-first Chrome extension built for researchers, students, clinicians, academics, and anyone who works with scholarly references.
Highlight bibliographic text from an article, reference list, publisher page, Google Scholar result, document, or PDF. CitRe turns it into a structured citation, helps verify the underlying publication, and prepares it for the tools you already use.
When life gives you articles, CitRe them. π
CitRe is designed around a simple workflow:
Highlight β Structure β Verify β Cite
It can:
- identify title, authors, year, journal, DOI, volume, issue, and page information;
- format references in APA, AMA, Vancouver, Harvard, Chicago author-date, and MLA;
- verify scholarly records against Crossref;
- show the evidence behind a proposed match rather than silently replacing your citation;
- explore related and similar literature;
- copy formatted references instantly;
- export BibTeX, RIS, and CSL-JSON;
- prepare references for Paperpile;
- capture copied text from PDFs and other restricted browser contexts.
CitRe treats citation matching as an assistive step, not an invisible correction.
When Crossref is enabled, CitRe can show evidence such as DOI agreement, title similarity, author overlap, publication year, journal metadata, and match confidence.
The user remains in control of whether a suggested record is used.
CitRe is intentionally local-first.
It does not use analytics, advertising, hidden telemetry, behavioral profiling, browsing-history tracking, or developer-side citation storage.
Citation parsing, formatting, page-metadata extraction, settings, and temporary citation state are handled locally whenever possible.
Crossref is optional and disabled by default. If enabled, only citation-related information needed for scholarly lookup or verification is sent directly from the browser to Crossref.
Your citations should not need to become someone else's dataset.
CitRe is not intended to replace a reference manager. It is designed to make the step before the reference manager faster and more reliable.
