Modern Chinese

Whispers of the Floating World (浮世微言, Fúshì Wēiyán) is a folk history of the present — a living collection of notes in the old Chinese biji tradition. The repository's name, UkiyoE, echoes ukiyo-e (浮世絵), the Japanese "pictures of the floating world" — only here, words stand in for pictures.

Official histories have always recorded kings, generals, rites, and institutions. The idle talk of the marketplace, the laughter of the lanes, the small joys and sorrows of ordinary people — these rarely make it into the official record. Yet they survive in the informal notebooks and miscellanies of the past: the worldly wit of Shishuo Xinyu, the jokes of Xiaolin Guangji, the nostalgic splendor of Dongjing Menghua Lu. These are the margins of history — and often its truth.

When the writer Meng Yuanlao fled south after the fall of the Northern Song capital, he set down Dongjing Menghua Lu simply to preserve the city he could never return to — for the ordinary life of one age is the longing of the next. Today, information travels in an instant; new slang and memes rise and die by the hour; a person, an event, is forgotten almost as soon as it appears. If no one records these things, what will people a generation from now have to hold on to, if they wish to understand our time?

That is the ambition of this site: to preserve the truth of this age, and to leave its words for those who come after. We record the folk, not the court; we keep the living voices of a moment, not the final verdicts of posterity. Praise and blame alike are gathered; the refined and the vulgar alike are admitted — so that a reader may glimpse the spirit of an age, overhear the talk of the crowd, and draw their own meaning.

What we record

Every entry concerns something that genuinely happened — a person, an event, a custom, a joke — that genuinely left its mark on people's hearts.

  • Selection: what reveals the temper of the times, stirs public conversation, or speaks to deeper shifts in the culture. We accept marketplace jokes and vulgar humour, but we draw a firm line: no grand politics, no celebrity gossip, no fleeting viral fads that die as quickly as they rise.
  • Sourcing: breadth first, concision second. Every entry draws on multiple channels — official reports AND folk voices (Weibo, Zhihu, Bilibili, Douyin, online communities, independent media). Official accounts tend toward restraint; folk voices fill in the picture. Where a story reaches beyond China's borders, we consult major international outlets (BBC, Reuters, AP, etc.) — but we strictly exclude tabloids, clickbait, content farms, and propaganda outlets, whose contamination would distort the entire record. Doubtful sources are never used uncorroborated. We cite what we can verify; we mark what we cannot; we never fabricate.

Structure

Every entry is built in two parts, with register and stance strictly separated:

  • Chronicle (记事) — a plain, objective account of the event in modern vernacular Chinese. Restrained in tone, free of editorializing, it lays out the facts along with multiple perspectives where disputes exist, and lets the reader draw their own conclusions.
  • Commentary (微言) — a short appraisal in classical Chinese, echoing the historian's "The Grand Historian remarks…". Here opinion is welcome: praise, blame, lament, irony. The form is brief, the register is classical, the aim is weight in few words.

In a phrase: the chronicle seeks truth; the commentary finds meaning. (The site itself is written in Chinese.)

Four columns

Column Spirit
Figures Lives of the age, recording praise and blame alike, that the person may be seen whole.
Events Records of happenings and phenomena, setting out all sides, that the truth may be preserved.
Customs Folk culture and internet wonders — seeing the age through the small things.
Humour Wit, jokes, and marketplace ribaldry — laughing without wounding, catching the pleasure of the thing.

The floating world is like foam on water — here one moment, gone the next. If no one records it, who will pass it on? We make no claim to the grand historian's ambition, but we quietly hold on to one small hope: that a hundred years from now, someone might open these pages and glimpse what our age was like. That is enough.
