FOOTBALL applies to the game, the object, the ambiguous word referring to both, the European variety and the American variety. We ran into this ambiguity on PR #1522, as previously discussed in issue #1418.
The question is how fine grained should this disctinction in Concepticon be?
If we see the disctinction through to the end, we'd need to add quite a large number of new concept sets for all these cases, inludig the distinct and the ambiguous ones. A fully specified system would distinguish combinations such as AMERICAN FOOTBALL (GAME), AMERICAN FOOTBALL (OBJECT), AMERICAN FOOTBALL (GAME OR OBJECT) and the same three for EUROPEAN FOOTBALL, as well as more general categories like FOOTBALL (GAME), FOOTBALL (OBJECT), and FOOTBALL (GAME OR OBJECT) without any distinct markers for the regional variety of the game. It is also important to consider that the interpretation of "football" (which regional sport it reffers to) usually depends on the speakers regional variety, a distinction we cannot make from a list alone. It is also unclear to what extent this has any real life applications for any potential studies.
For now, in PR #1522, only three distinctions were made: 4166 FOOTBALL (GAME OR OBJECT), 4167 FOOTBALL (GAME), 4168 FOOTBALL (OBJECT). The same set of dinstinctions was also introduced for BASKETBALL to give a comparitive concept set.
