"Cannot login" device message likely does more harm than good for multirelay setups #8614

Description

@link2xt

chat.in-the.eu currently has some troubles, it is not possible to create a proflie and existing users apparently cannot login.

Configuring fails with "Configuration failed. Error: Cannot login as "x1bwofwjslpe2xq5wu54@chat.in-the.eu". Please check if the address and the password are correct. (no response: code: None, info: Some("[UNAVAILABLE] Temporary authentication failure. [chatmail:2026-08-21 09:58:55]"))".

The problem is that existing users also get device messages saying Cannot login as "REDACTED@chat.in-the.eu". Please check if the address and the password are correct.
There is nothing the user can do, they don't know the password or even don't know there is a password involved internally, and the problem can only be fixed by the relay operator.

Related issue: #8534
There is a PR open at #8589 closing it. It still makes sense to prefer login errors over connection errors when trying multiple connections in parallel even if we delete the device message.
