Unable to Navigate Between Layers During Step-by-Step Exploration

Description

Layer navigation is not functioning correctly in the current Monarch build. After entering the overview layer, I am unable to navigate to subsequent layers for step-by-step exploration.

This appears to be related to incorrect or non-functional button mapping.

Steps to Reproduce

• Launch the current Monarch build.
• Open a tactile graphic that contains multiple layers.
• Enter the overview layer.
• Attempt to navigate to the next/subsequent layer using the device buttons.

Expected Behavior

The user should be able to navigate sequentially between the available layers using the appropriate device buttons.

For example:

Overview layer → Layer 1
Layer 1 → Layer 2
Layer 2 → subsequent layers

Actual Behavior

After entering the overview layer, pressing the relevant navigation buttons does not move the user to the subsequent layers.

Suspected Cause

There may be an issue with the button mapping for layer navigation.

Summary from meeting on 31st September, 2026:

In the old IMAGE-Monarch build, the D-1 and D-8 buttons handled layer-to-layer navigation, and I need some documentation before I can reimplement this in the current build. Specifically, I need details on how D-1 and D-8 map to input codes/events on the Monarch, whether layer navigation should stay bound to these same keys or if there's now a preferred key for this function, and, if possible, some sample code showing this.
