Cancel development because of alternatives

There are many alternatives to imageFormatFallback.js.
Examples for this are serve depending on headers via htaccess and HTML <picture>

Because of such alternatives and other projects, I think that further updates on this project can be omitted.

Any opinions? Does anyone rely on imageFormatFallback.js, maybe?

This repo has been stale for years, and as stated, there are alternatives.
I'm about to archive the repo. The repo will then be mirrored to GitLab for consistency*

Alternatives include

• HTML Picture-Tag
• CSS @media / @supports
• check request headers for support (with Htaccess or PHP)
• As of 2026, WEBP is pretty much universally supported anyway. Exotic file formats are exotic anyway and shouldn't be used. In cases where PNGs are preferred, check out Oxipng as it usually reduces PNG file size drastically (for me usually 40-95%, rarely less). It's a lossless tool!

I don't have the patience to document those alternatives properly, but they are easily searchable on the web, eg "css check if image type is supported"

* As of 2026, I'm currently mirroring Repos from GitHub to GitLab bidirectionally. Target platform might change later. I'm too lazy to create and maintain the sync script on both platforms for this stale repo tho, let alone pay for it to exist and run.
