Framerate while scrolling through menu/ui items is extremely sluggish

Framerate drops while scrolling through ui/menu items of the browser

1. Open the browser
2. Click on three dot button
3. Scroll
4. See error

Expected behavior
The scrolling performance should be very smooth.

Additional context
The device's processor is mid range, if not entry level, so this kind of performance is unexpected.

Can you please try to disable animations in the settings and see if the issue improves?

Yes I did try disabling animations ,but the sluggishness persist. I even tried disabling animations from android setting as well, and changed refresh rates of screen ,but no positive results.

I did somw tests and on my device, which isnt high end, but low mid range, its arround 60 fps. Browser cant exceed 60 fps for some reason (my screen supports 120). And also, there is drops to arround 40. Possibly because of white glow that happens when you click something in menu. In general i wouldnt say its slow.

@FaFre it was smooth in v0.11 but started lagging in v0.20

the bottom sheets for tabs and three dot menu are borderline unusable 1-5fps on my device.

and using the new tab menu crashes all the open apps on phone including weblibre. appears to be out of memory situation likely from some memory leak.

settings page is also slightly more laggy compared to v0.11

I guess you are using android 12? Maybe disabling animations will help, please try it.

I am on android 16, disabling animations made no difference.

the tabs bottom sheet does open instantly with animations off, but scrolling the list is still laggy.

and three dot menu opens with animation regardless of setting. and scrolling it is still laggy.

and the new tab page opens instantly, but still crashes the device.

v0.11 was working smooth on same device same os.

i remember very early versions also had laggy ui and you disabled impeller in flutter and that fixed it. maybe that got changed again.

When you guys completely close the browser using "Quit" from the menu and after a fresh start without opening a tab (just staying in home screen) does the issue with the fps still appear?

Most likely flutter/flutter#187009 is a factor.

yes, issue still appears

is there any reason why impeller was enabled again in this release ? can't we do without it ?

Yes impeller has been re-enabled because on my test devices the performance improved. Many people reported improvements as well: #441 so it seems now that this is a device/GPU specific issue. The new alpha build will offer a separate legacy version using skia (the old render engine). It will also help to do some side by side comparisons.

Please give me some feedback after the alpha got released.
