The current use of PGU's GUI is at it's end - many features, such as window resizing and async display of world images are jury rigged into it and at many points are core functionality overwritten just to make things work. Additionally PGU is discontinued.
The logical solution would be to use a new GUI Framework and kivy looks like a good option.
